Dr. Robert Heller Bio
I received my doctorate in counseling psychology from Boston University and became licensed in both Massachusetts and Florida. I have worked with children, adolescents and families in my capacity as a certified school psychologist and I have taught counseling and psychology at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.
I was awarded the distinguished diplomate in behavioral psychology by the American Board of Behavioral Psychology and then by the American Board of Professional Psychology in recognition of achieving the highest standards and competencies in professional psychology.
My orientation is known as “cognitive-behavioral therapy”. I trained personally with the founder of Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy, Dr. Albert Ellis and I am a certified fellow and training supervisor of the Albert Ellis Institute.
I received advanced training in the use of hypnosis and earned certification as a “hypnosis consultant”. I use hypnosis both as a separate treatment approach and often incorporate it in my work with clinical and non-clinical clients.
I was trained by Dr. Francine Shapiro, the founder of EMDR and hold the Level 2 Certificate. EMDR is a specialized method, which can be very effective in the area of performance enhancement.
As a former musician, I have performed in front of large audiences and, as a psychologist later worked with many performing artists privately and conducted workshops on “Performance Anxiety” for the Berkeley College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.
As a athlete, I competed in numerous individual and team sports throughout my youth and than specialized in tennis, playing on both high school and college varsity teams. I taught tennis, competed regularly in tournaments and have won several local and statewide titles. I am certified as both a tennis teaching professional through the USPTA and as a personal fitness instructor. I work with recreational, elite and professional athletes on and off the court to help them perform at their best.
I have been on the faculty and given talks and workshops at national conferences for the USPTA, PTR and to local public and private facilities and organizations. I have taught Sports Psychology and Applied Counseling Skills at Lynn University.
I have written numerous articles on sports and various aspects of tennis psychology, sports enhancement and managing pressure.
My “Mental Skills for Tennis” clinic has been presented to professional groups, academies and clubs around the U.S. and internationally.
My CD-ROM, TENNISMIND is used by players and coaches around the world to improve their mental skills through a series of 20 short lessons.
I provide 1-on-1 mental coaching in my Boca Raton location and around the world via phone and video conferencing (SKYPE).
